How bills are split in Japan
At a nomikai (drinking party) or group dinner in Japan the bill is normally split evenly among everyone, regardless of who ate or drank what. The organizer (kanji) collects the money, often rounding each share up to the nearest 500 or 1,000 yen and keeping the difference toward the next event or the tip-free service.
Two variations are common. Senior colleagues or the boss may pay more than juniors, and at some parties men pay more than women. This calculator handles both through the weighted split: choose how many people pay more and by what factor.
Individual payment (betsubetsu, 別々) is possible at many casual restaurants if you ask when ordering, but at izakaya and set-course dinners one bill is the norm.
