Shoe Size Converter: tips and things to know
- Japanese shoe sizes are simply the foot length in centimeters, the same for men and women: 26.0 is a US men's 8 or a US women's 9.
- Sizes above 28 cm (US men's 10) are hard to find in ordinary Japanese shoe stores. Look for "large size" (大きいサイズ) sections or shop online.
- Japanese width standards are E, EE (standard) and EEE. If you have narrow feet, Japanese shoes may feel wide.

Japanese shoe sizes are centimeters
Unlike US, UK and EU systems, Japan sizes shoes by the length of the foot in centimeters, in half-centimeter steps. There is no separate men's and women's scale: 24.5 means a 24.5 cm foot whoever is wearing it. This makes converting easy once you know your foot length.
To measure, stand on a sheet of paper, mark the heel and the longest toe, and measure the distance. Round up to the nearest half centimeter and compare it with the JP column.
Converting from US, UK and EU sizes
US men's sizes are roughly JP size minus 18 (JP 27.0 = US 9). US women's sizes run about one size higher than men's for the same length (JP 24.0 = US women's 7). UK sizes are about half a size below US men's. EU sizes are a separate scale where JP 26.0 is about EU 41.
Sneaker brands often print all four on the box or the tongue label, so you can check the brand's own mapping against this table.
Finding large and small sizes in Japan
Most shops stock men's sizes up to about 28.0 cm and women's up to about 25.0 cm. Larger feet are served by dedicated big-size stores, the large-size sections of ABC-Mart and department stores, and online retailers, where sizes up to 30 or 31 cm are common for sneakers.
Children's shoes are sized in centimeters in half steps as well, which is convenient for tracking growth.
Width matters too
Japanese shoes are labelled with a width (wise) letter: E, EE (2E, the standard), EEE (3E) and sometimes 4E. Japanese lasts tend to be wider and lower at the instep than European ones, so people with narrow feet may want to go down half a size or look for E-width shoes.
