Screen Size Chart: tips and things to know

  • The comfortable viewing distance is about three times the screen height, or about 1.5 times for 4K.
  • For desk work 24-inch monitors are the norm; creative work tends toward 27 inches and up.
  • The same diagonal gives different widths and heights depending on the aspect ratio (16:9, 21:9 and so on).
  • Product dimensions include the bezel, so the set is a few centimeters larger than the screen figures here.
  • Japanese apartments are small: a 43-inch TV suits a 6-jo (10 m²) room, and 55 inches is plenty for most living rooms.

Screen Size Chart FAQ

How many centimeters is an inch?

2.54 cm. The inch figure for a TV or monitor is the diagonal of the screen.

What does the inch figure measure?

The diagonal from corner to corner, not the width. Width and height depend on the aspect ratio.

What TV size fits my room?

Roughly 32 to 40 inches for a 6-jo room, 43 to 50 for 8 jo, and 55 or more for 10 jo and up. With 4K you can sit closer, so many people go one size up.

How wide is an ultrawide monitor?

A 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide is about 80 cm wide; a 49-inch 32:9 super-ultrawide is about 120 cm. Check your desk width.
