Salary Converter: tips and things to know
- The average annual salary in Japan is roughly ¥4.6 million according to the National Tax Agency's private-sector salary survey.
- The Tokyo minimum wage is ¥1,226 per hour as of October 2025; other prefectures are lower, and rates are revised every October.
- Freelancers pay the full cost of their own social insurance, so the same gross figure leaves a freelancer with less take-home pay than an employee.

Why 245 working days
A year has 365 days. Take away 104 weekend days and about 16 public holidays and paid days off, and roughly 245 working days remain. Japanese employers commonly quote figures between 240 and 250, so check the number of annual holidays (nenkan kyujitsu) in a job posting and adjust.
Hours per day defaults to 8, the statutory maximum for a normal working day in Japan. Many companies use 7.5 or 7.75 hours; that difference changes the hourly figure by several percent.
How Japanese job ads state pay
Full-time postings usually show a monthly salary (gekkyu) or an annual salary (nenshu). Monthly figures often exclude bonuses (shoyo), which are paid once or twice a year and can add two to four months of pay, so an annual figure is not always monthly pay times twelve.
Part-time and temporary postings show an hourly wage (jikyu). Contract and freelance work is sometimes quoted per day (nikkyu). This converter lets you put all of them on the same footing before you compare offers.
