Japan Overtime Pay Calculator — Statutory overtime, late-night and holiday premiums from your monthly salary or hourly rate
Calculate overtime pay under Japanese labor law from a monthly salary or hourly rate: ordinary overtime at 25%, late-night overtime at 50% and holiday work at 35%. Shows each premium separately so you can check a payslip or estimate unpaid overtime.
Enter your hourly rate directly, or let the tool work it out from your monthly salary.
Before you rely on thisThis tool gives an estimate using the minimum premium rates set by law. Your actual overtime pay depends on your company's work rules and your contract, on whether you have a fixed overtime allowance (koteizangyo-dai), and on which allowances count toward the base rate. The higher rate for overtime beyond 60 hours a month is not applied. If the numbers look wrong or you suspect unpaid overtime, talk to your HR department, the local Labor Standards Inspection Office (Rodo Kijun Kantokusho), or a labor and social security attorney or lawyer.
Overtime Pay Calculator: tips and things to know
- Ordinary overtime in Japan must be paid at 25% or more above your hourly rate (hourly rate × 1.25).
- Work between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. carries a further 25% night premium, so late-night overtime is 50% or more.
- Overtime beyond 60 hours in a month must be paid at 50% or more, at companies of every size since April 2023.

The three kinds of premium pay
What people call overtime pay (zangyo-dai) is really three separate premiums, and the Labor Standards Act sets a minimum rate for each.
- Overtime: hours beyond 8 a day or 40 a week. At least 25% extra.
- Late-night work: hours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. At least 25% extra.
- Holiday work: work on a statutory rest day. At least 35% extra.
Premiums stack when they overlap
Because the three premiums have different causes, they add up when the conditions overlap.
If your overtime runs past 10 p.m., the 25% overtime premium plus the 25% night premium give at least 50%. The "late-night overtime" box in this tool applies that 50%.
Holiday work that runs into the night gets the 35% holiday premium plus the 25% night premium, at least 60%.
The higher rate beyond 60 hours a month
Once overtime in a calendar month passes 60 hours, the hours above 60 must be paid at 50% or more. This originally applied only to large companies, but since April 1, 2023 it applies to small and medium-sized companies too.
This tool does not apply the 60-hour uplift, so in a heavy month the real figure will be higher than shown.
How the hourly base rate is worked out
Premiums are calculated on an hourly rate. If you are paid monthly, divide the monthly salary by the scheduled working hours per month. A ¥300,000 salary over 160 scheduled hours gives ¥1,875 an hour.
Not all of your monthly pay counts. Commuting, family and housing allowances, among others, may legally be excluded from the base. Which allowances your employer excludes is set in the work rules, so check your payslip against them for the exact rate.
Statutory rest days versus other days off
The 35% holiday premium applies only to work on a statutory rest day (hotei kyujitsu), the one day off a week the law requires.
On a five-day week, working the other day off (shotei kyujitsu) is usually treated as ordinary overtime at 25%, not holiday work at 35%. Your work rules say which day is the statutory rest day.
If you are not being paid overtime
Unpaid overtime is common enough in Japan to have a name, sabisu zangyo ("service overtime"), but it is illegal, and the rules apply to foreign workers on every visa type. Keep your own record of start and finish times; timestamps from your PC, security gate or messaging apps are accepted as evidence.
Claims for unpaid wages can go back three years. The Labor Standards Inspection Office handles complaints free of charge, and some offices offer consultation in English and other languages.

Overtime Pay Calculator FAQ
How do I get an hourly rate from a monthly salary?
Divide the monthly salary by the scheduled working hours per month. A ¥300,000 salary over 160 hours gives ¥1,875 an hour.
Why is late-night overtime 50%?
The 25% overtime premium and the 25% late-night premium apply at the same time, so the total is at least 50%.
I have a fixed overtime allowance. Does this still apply?
Yes. A fixed allowance (minashi zangyo) covers a set number of hours. Anything beyond that must be paid on top, and you can use this tool to estimate the extra.
Do these rules apply to foreign workers?
Yes. The Labor Standards Act covers everyone employed in Japan regardless of nationality or visa.
