Full-width and half-width characters
Japanese text can use two widths of the same Latin letters, digits and symbols. Full-width characters (全角, zenkaku) occupy the same square as a kanji: Ａ, １, ！. Half-width characters (半角, hankaku) are the ordinary ASCII ones: A, 1, !. There is also half-width katakana (ｶﾀｶﾅ), a relic of early computer systems that some banks and legacy forms still require.
Many Japanese online forms reject the wrong width without saying which one they want. As a rule, names, addresses and free text go in full-width; phone numbers, postal codes, credit-card numbers and email addresses go in half-width. Converting a whole block of text at once with this tool is faster than retyping it.
Katakana and hiragana
The two kana syllabaries are one-to-one, so the tool converts between them character by character. Furigana (reading) fields on forms usually specify which they want: フリガナ means katakana, ふりがな means hiragana.
