Drying laundry in Japan
Most Japanese apartments have no tumble dryer. Laundry is hung outside on the balcony (soto-boshi) or, in bad weather and during the June–July rainy season (tsuyu), indoors (heya-boshi), often in the bathroom, which in newer buildings has a built-in heater-dryer (yokushitsu kansoki). The whole season, the humidity and the space all change how long things take, which is what this tool estimates.
Indoor drying is the source of the well-known musty smell. It comes from bacteria that multiply while clothes stay damp, so speed matters more than anything: a fan, an air conditioner in dry (joshitsu) mode or a dehumidifier pointed at the laundry usually halves the time.

Why does indoor laundry smell musty?
If drying takes more than about 5 hours, bacteria such as Moraxella multiply in the damp fabric and produce the smell. Improve airflow or use a fan or dehumidifier to dry faster.
How long does the bathroom dryer take?
About 1 to 2 hours for thin items and 3 to 4 hours for thick ones. Do not overload it, and leave space between garments.
How can I dry faster in winter?
Cold air and stuffy rooms slow drying. Use the air-conditioner heating plus a circulator, or hang outside during the sunny morning hours and bring things in early.
